When it comes to mobile living, motorhomes offer an incredible amount of freedom and benefits. Whether you’re planning a cross-country excursion or simply want to pull up to a local campsite and relax on the weekends, a motorhome can provide the comfort and versatility that you’re looking for. But why choose a motorhome over a towable RV, and how do you know which type (class) of motorhome is right for you?
Today on the O’Connor RV blog, we’ll be taking a closer look at the three main motorhome classes, and the many features and benefits that they offer. There’s still plenty of time left to enjoy BC’s beautiful camping season - let’s dive in!
There are three main types (or classes) of motorhomes: A, B, and C. We’re going to keep these descriptions brief, but for a more in-depth breakdown you can head to a recent O’Connor RV article about the differences between Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes.
Class A Motorhomes. These motorhomes are the closest thing to a full-size home on wheels, and are usually quite large, luxurious and full of amenities. This type of motorhome can be used as a tour bus, for large families and for those who are spending a lot of time on the road.
Class B Motorhomes. On the other side of the spectrum, Class B motorhomes are much smaller units, typically consisting of converted vans from brands like Sprinter and Pleasure Way. They’re a popular choice for 1-2 occupants, and often employ clever space-saving hacks to make the most out of every square inch.
Class C Motorhomes. This is the most common type of motorhome, and straddles the line between Class A and Class B. They have plenty of space and amenities onboard, comfortably sleep 2-4 passengers, and are compact enough to make driving and parking relatively easy.
We’ve already established that you’re in the market for a new RV - yay! So now it’s just a matter of choosing the right unit for your needs and lifestyle. As a group of experienced campers and travellers ourselves, the O’Connor RV team is passionate about the many pros and benefits that motorhomes can offer! Here are a few of our favourite motorhome features that will hopefully help you move closer to a final decision:
1. Motorhomes combine your living space and your vehicle into one handy unit. This is particularly useful for folks who don’t own a large pickup truck for towing, as you can simply hop in, buckle up and hit the open road!
2. They tend to suit travellers who will be spending plenty of time on the road, since you can safely use the amenities on board while you’re on-the-go. With a truck-and-tow RV setup, you’re forced to pull over for meals, bathroom breaks and naps, plus all passengers must remain in the towing vehicle at all times. But in a motorhome, you can prepare a snack, catch some shut-eye and even use the washroom while the driver stays focused on the road.
3. If you’re worried about getting behind the wheel of an all-in-one unit, put those worries to rest - new technology is making motorhomes easier than ever to drive and park! With 360-degree cameras and clearance sensors, built-in video monitors and so much more cool new tech, manoeuvring a motorhome has become as easy as driving a minivan.
4. Space-saving designs and state-of-the-art gear has changed mobile homes entirely. Compostable toilets, solar-powered appliances and lightweight building materials are all helping to make motorhomes more efficient and stylish than ever, while modern engine designs are helping to improve fuel efficiency.
