Class a, class b, class c motorhomes difference

Whether you’re just starting to dive into the world of RV ownership or you’re a seasoned adventurer ready for something new, the multitude of options available between trailers, campers and motorhomes can be confusing! Although RVs share plenty of similar features, it’s important to know the differences, pros and cons between each type of mobile home, so that you can make an educated decision about which unit will work best for you. Today, our O’Connor RV experts are breaking down the differences between Class A, Class B and Class C motorhomes to help you decide on the perfect model for your needs and lifestyle!

Class A Motorhomes

Class A motorhomes are the heaviest hitters in the world of RVs. They take up a lot of space as they thunder down BC highways, and are the closest thing to an actual home on wheels that you’re likely to find. They’re often built on a large bus or truck chassis, and can be as much as 45-feet long. Class A motorhomes are often the “bus” of choice for touring celebrities (a quick search for “celebrity tour buses” will demonstrate how impressive these motorhomes can be!), but plenty of West Coast families who are looking to travel with lots of space and luxuries on board most certainly purchase Class A units as well.

Pros: Space, most closely resembles a real home, lots of space, often quite luxurious, makes a statement - did we mention space?!

Cons: Challenging to drive and park (special licensing and insurance will most likely be required), not the most fuel efficient, might be a lot to take on for a new RV owner (or not - don’t let us tell you what to do!)

Class B Motorhomes

On the other side of the spectrum, Class B motorhomes are typically the smallest of the classes and include units like converted camper vans, which have exploded in popularity in recent years. Don’t let the smaller size of Class B motorhomes fool you - newer models in particular are often jam-packed with luxurious features, and can provide all of the comforts that two people could ever need while on the road. For example, this Renegade RV Class B Camper Van features a slide out, dining area, full kitchen, full bathroom onboard plus outdoor shower, skylights, state-of-the-art technology packed into every square inch, and more.

Pros: Easy enough to drive and park, improved fuel economy over other motorhome classes, affordable units are easy to find, luxurious upgrades are available, small environmental footprint.

Cons: There is no way around it - they are small. Class B units are best suited for one or two occupants who are open to giving up some creature comforts and luxuries.

Class C Motorhomes

Generally falling in the middle of Class A and Class B motorhomes is Class C, which provides adequate space for up to four, and usually sports a signature overhang that juts out over the top of the cab. Class C motorhomes, such as this Coachman Freelander Class C Motorhome, tend to suit novice RV owners, veteran travellers and even folks who are using their RV as a permanent living space. They’re loaded with plenty of creature comforts on board, handle confidently on a wide range of terrains for both big and small adventures, and can be driven and parked with relative ease.

For those looking to really take their RV lifestyle to the next level, we stock plenty of Super C motorhomes here at our Chilliwack dealership! These units offer the luxury of Class A motorhomes, but are built on a heavy duty Ford F-550 chassis, making them considerably more powerful and rugged. Super C’s maintain the signature shape of a Class C motorhome with the overhead bunk located over the cab, but with their substantial amenities and extra power they truly deserve to be in a class all their own.
