As the first signs of spring make an appearance in the Lower Mainland, you can safely start planning your next exciting season of RV adventures! With plenty of hidden gem campgrounds and inspiring RV destinations just a short drive from Chilliwack, we know that you’re eager to hit the open road; but getting your RV road-ready requires a lot more work than simply brushing off the winter cobwebs and jumping on Highway 1. Just as you took the time to carefully prepare your RV for winter storage, you’ll need to reverse that process and de-winterize your trailer, camper, fifth wheel, toy hauler or motorhome. Not quite sure how to bring your RV back to life? Our experienced team at O’Connor RV has put together a few handy steps to get you started!

How to DIY De-Winterize Your RV

Water Systems. You took the time to flush your systems of all water and moisture in the fall, but now it’s time to get that fresh water flowing again. Connect a garden hose to your water hookups and start flushing fresh water through your pipes, tubes and plumbing systems. Open all faucets, flush the toilet, and open the lines for all appliances and systems that are connected to the plumbing. Once the water is running clear and there is no sign of pink RV antifreeze left, you can begin the process of filling your freshwater tank and water heater.

Electricity. If your unit relies on a battery or generator, you’ll need to recharge and reconnect these systems. Be warned that it can take some time for a battery to recuperate all of its juice - sometimes up to a few days. If you have big plans for an upcoming weekend, then give your battery and generator plenty of time to recharge.

Interior and Exterior. It’s important to carefully inspect the exterior of your RV, since damage is most likely to occur during winter storage months. Unroll your awning to check for rips and tears, and look for any cracks that might need to be patched and sealed. Give the inside of your unit a thorough cleaning, and open the windows on a warm day to allow it to air out. Check your vents and the seals around the windows at this time as well.

Odds and Ends. Other items that might need attention (and will vary by unit) include servicing under the hood, brake check and lube, inspecting tire treads and checking tire pressure, lubricating hinges and towing hookups, testing and repairing appliances, checking trailer lights, and servicing heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
